Enzo Fernández discusses Lionel Messi's legacy and Argentina's future
Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernández has reflected on the legacy of Lionel Messi following the captain's retirement from the Argentina national team. Fernández described Messi as “irreplaceable,” stating that there is no point in searching for another player like him. He noted that while the transition will feel “strange,” the team will continue to build its history through new leaders.
Fernández highlighted Messi’s humility and competitive drive as lasting lessons for younger players. Regarding the future of the squad, he suggested that leadership will be distributed among several experienced figures, including Emiliano Martínez, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez, Lautaro Martínez, and Julián Álvarez. He also expressed support for coach Lionel Scaloni, noting that Scaloni has built a cohesive group with a clear identity.
In addition to discussing the national team, Fernández spoke about his enduring connection to his former club, River Plate, noting that he follows their matches despite the time difference in England. He also praised former teammate Leonardo Ponzio for his deep understanding of the club and the game.
