The Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) has proposed a new system for referee appointments in the Greek Basket League (GBL). Under the proposal presented by EOK President Vangelis Liolios, teams would be able to agree upon the referees for their matches from a list of available officials provided by the Central Referee Committee (KED).

Liolios has given the GBL teams a one-week deadline to respond to the proposal. The plan is part of a broader five-year strategy (2021-2026) aimed at modernizing officiating, which includes the introduction of AI to assist in appointments for lower categories and the continuous evaluation of referees.

During meetings with club representatives, Liolios noted that 13 teams participated in the discussions, while Panathinaikos AKTOR chose not to attend. Liolios criticized Panathinaikos' absence, describing it as a choice of “isolation” and a lack of willingness to cooperate for the common good. He also addressed concerns regarding professional officiating, asserting that GBL referees are professionals subject to continuous training and monthly examinations, and warned against the intimidation of officials.
