EPA and Pennsylvania regulators address methane control rules

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is finalizing a rule that would significantly weaken leak inspection and equipment upgrade requirements for approximately 700,000 low-producing “stripper wells.” While these wells account for only 6% of domestic oil and natural gas production, they are noted for being older and more prone to leaking methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

In Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Oil and Gas Technical Advisory Board is scheduled to meet on September 16. The agenda includes discussions on new methane control regulations, the federal well plugging program, and updates regarding the Utica Shale waiver. The meeting will also address various administrative and regulatory issues within the state's oil and gas sector.
