EPA increases hazardous substances assessment throughput

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has reported an increase in hazardous substances decision-making, completing 66 application assessments during the 2025/26 period. This represents the highest annual total since 2018/19.

According to Dr. Fernando Torres-Vélez, General Manager of Hazardous Substances and New Organisms, the agency is focusing on practical improvements to support access to innovative products while maintaining regulatory oversight. The number of applications awaiting assessment decreased by 36.5 percent, falling from 96 to 61. Since July 1, 2024, the total number of pending applications has halved from 121.

The EPA also noted a rise in the use of rapid assessments, with 51 applications decided through this pathway, the highest level since 2015/16. Additionally, the agency supported international regulatory pathways for seven approved applications during the year.
