EPA Inspector General to investigate 2023 Ohio train derailment response

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Inspector General has announced an investigation into the agency’s response to the February 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. The review follows pressure from local residents and Vice President JD Vance.

The investigation aims to assess the agency’s handling of the disaster and subsequent health and environmental concerns. During the incident, officials conducted a ‘vent and burn’ of five rail cars containing vinyl chloride to prevent potential explosions. While officials at the time cited explosion risks, the National Transportation Safety Board later determined that this action, which released a massive plume of smoke across several states, was unnecessary.

Local residents have expressed ongoing concerns regarding chemical exposure and health issues. Some community members have reported significant increases in illnesses, including cancer, in the aftermath of the derailment.
