EPA moves to repeal greenhouse gas emission rules for power plants
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced plans to permanently repeal federal greenhouse gas emission regulations for power plants, a move described as the largest deregulatory action in the history of the U.S. power sector.
The agency intends to eliminate the 2024 standards established under the Biden administration, which would have required many existing coal-fired and new natural gas plants to achieve 90% carbon dioxide reductions through carbon capture and storage (CCS) by 2032. The EPA asserts these rules have 'virtually no benefit' and instead impose burdensome costs.
According to agency data, the repeal of the Biden-era regulations is projected to save Americans $310 billion, while eliminating remaining greenhouse gas-related power plant regulations is expected to save companies $370 million in direct compliance costs. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated the administration's goal is to protect American energy and lower electricity prices.
The agency has initiated a 45-day public comment period to finalize the decision. The announcement is expected to extend the operational lifespan of existing coal-fired power plants.
