EPA repeals greenhouse gas emission limits for US power plants

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under the Trump administration, has moved to repeal the 2024 greenhouse gas emission standards for coal and natural gas-fired power plants. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the decision, framing it as an effort to boost grid reliability, lower electricity costs, and end a “war on coal.”

The repeal reverses Biden-era mandates that required existing coal plants and new gas plants to capture 90% of their carbon emissions by 2032 or 2039. Industry groups, such as America’s Power, suggest the move could save businesses approximately $1.2 billion in annual regulatory costs. However, environmental advocates and organizations like Human Rights Watch warn of significant public health and climate consequences.

Estimates suggest the policy shift could lead to an additional 533 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by 2040, with some analyses predicting total U.S. emissions could be 1 gigaton higher by 2040 than under previous policies. Critics note that the previous standards were projected to prevent thousands of health issues, including asthma attacks and deaths, by 2035.
