EPA urges Savannah Region leaders to combat environmental destruction
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called on traditional leaders and residents of Ghana's Savannah Region to curb activities that are damaging the local ecosystem. Savannah Regional Director Abu Iddrisu emphasized that protecting natural resources requires collective responsibility and cooperation between the agency, local chiefs, and communities.
During a visit to the Jakpa palace in Damongo, Dr. Iddrisu identified several critical threats to the region, including illegal sand and gravel winning, indiscriminate felling of economic trees, illegal mining, and commercial charcoal production. He also highlighted air pollution and the improper disposal of polythene materials as widespread concerns.
The Savannah Region covers approximately 34,000 square kilometers and is largely agrarian, containing significant resources such as gold deposits in the Bole traditional area, the White and Black Volta rivers, and Mole National Park. Dr. Iddrisu stated that the EPA is prepared to work with relevant institutions and individuals to promote government policies and ensure the sustainable management of these resources.
