EPDK updates R&D and product development rules for energy distributors

The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) has implemented comprehensive changes to the support systems for research, development, and innovation activities within the electricity and natural gas distribution sectors.

A key feature of the new regulation is the introduction of Product Development (Ür-Ge) support. This mechanism is designed to assist companies in transitioning from R&D to commercialization by funding activities such as prototype development, testing, certification, software development, and localization before products reach mass production.

Under the new rules, distribution companies may allocate up to 10 percent of their R&D budget during the tariff application period to cover Ür-Ge expenses. Additionally, the regulation allows for the use of R&D funds to establish R&D centers, design centers, and incubation centers, as well as to support entrepreneurship programs, idea competitions, and training workshops. The updated framework also includes incentives for intellectual property, with potential support of up to 1.5 million lira for projects that secure patents.
