Metro de Medellín suspends southern Line A after catenary failure
On the morning of 16 July 2026 a fault in the catenary – the overhead power system – near Envigado caused the Metro de Medellín to suspend service on the southern portion of Line A. Trains continued to run only between the northern stations Niquía and Poblado, while the six stations Aguacatala, Ayurá, Envigado, Itagüí, Sabaneta and La Estrella remained out of operation.
The operator activated its Plan de Continuidad, coordinating with the Valle de Aburrá metropolitan area to provide substitute bus routes that connect passengers to the still‑operating stations. No timetable for full restoration was given as technical crews continued diagnostics and repairs.
In addition, the Metro issued a special accessibility bulletin for the deaf community, sharing an audiovisual notice with Colombian Sign Language (LSC) that explains the situation and the alternative transport options.
