EPFO clarifies retirement interest rules and launches new service history feature

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has clarified rules regarding inoperative EPF accounts and introduced a new digital feature for members.

An EPF account is classified as inoperative when it stops earning interest. For members who retire at or after age 55, the account becomes inoperative three years after the date of retirement. For those retiring earlier, such as at age 50, interest continues to accrue until the member reaches age 58. Generally, interest continues to be credited to the account for up to three years following retirement, depending on the specific retirement age, but ceases once the account reaches inoperative status.

To assist with account management, the EPFO has launched a ‘Service History’ feature on its e-service portal. This tool allows members to view all current and previous employer records associated with their Universal Account Number (UAN) in one location. The feature is designed to help employees track member IDs and employment dates, addressing issues where old records were not properly linked or updated during job transitions.
