EPFO reports 9,330 crore rupees in unclaimed funds in inactive accounts

An RTI report reveals that approximately 9,330 crore rupees remain unclaimed in 30.91 lakh inactive Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) accounts in India. While this figure represents a decrease from the 10,181 crore rupees held in 31.83 lakh inactive accounts as of March 31, 2025, a significant amount of capital remains uncollected.

To facilitate easier access, the EPFO has streamlined processes under the EPF Scheme 2026, which aims to increase transparency and digitalization. Eligible members can claim funds online through the EPFO Member Portal by using their Universal Account Number (UAN), provided it is linked with Aadhaar, PAN, and a bank account.

Additionally, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has introduced features on the UMANG app to simplify UAN management. Users can now generate or activate their UAN using Aadhaar-based face authentication. This digital shift is intended to reduce reliance on manual verification and allow employees to manage services such as checking EPF balances and downloading passbooks directly from their smartphones.
