EPFO to raise mandatory wage ceiling to Rs. 25,000
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is set to increase the mandatory wage ceiling for social security coverage from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 per month. This change, scheduled to take effect on September 17, 2026, is expected to bring approximately 5.1 million additional employees under the compulsory coverage umbrella.
For employees earning between Rs. 15,001 and Rs. 25,000, the 12% provident fund contribution will be calculated on a higher base. For instance, monthly contributions could rise from a maximum of Rs. 1,800 to as much as Rs. 3,000. While this reduces immediate take-home pay, it increases long-term retirement savings and impacts benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI).
Employers will face increased payroll costs as their contribution obligations for PF, pension, and insurance rise. This shift may particularly impact MSMEs, manufacturing units, and labor-intensive sectors. Companies will need to review wage structures and budget for these additional employment costs.
