Ephebus sculpture returns to Agiou Sosti Square in Athens

The 'Ephebus' sculpture, a 1940 work by Thanasis Apartis, has been reinstalled in Agiou Sosti Square in Athens. The 2.50-meter tall bronze male nude was placed in its new location on Friday, October 16, during a ceremony attended by Athens Mayor Harris Doukas and local residents.

The sculpture's return follows a 23-year period of being out of public view, during which it underwent various relocations, suffered damage, and was kept in storage. The piece holds significant historical value for the local community, particularly for former residents of the Polygono refugee settlement who moved to the Neo Kosmos area in the 1960s.

Originally commissioned by the Greek government to commemorate Greek youth, the bronze casting was completed at the Alexis Rudier foundry in Paris. While initially intended for Vasilissis Olga Avenue, it was previously located in front of the Evelpidon Military Academy before its recent restoration and relocation.
