Epic Games CEO warns of major video game industry crash

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, has warned that the video game industry is facing its most severe crisis since the 1980s. He cites two primary drivers for this potential crash: the skyrocketing internal costs of AAA game production and external hardware supply challenges.

Sweeney notes that the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is creating intense competition for hardware components. This demand from the AI sector is causing the prices of RAM and storage to quadruple, potentially leaving the gaming industry with limited resources. He predicts a continuous supply crisis for gaming-relevant hardware over the next three years, suggesting that the only long-term solution is the construction of massive new manufacturing facilities.

Adding to the internal pressure, Raph Koster, CEO of Playable Worlds, highlighted that development costs for AAA titles have increased roughly tenfold every decade. Historical data shows costs rising from US$ 1 million in the mid-1990s to as much as US$ 400 million for modern blockbusters.

In contrast to these warnings, Matthew Bromberg, CEO of Unity, expressed optimism regarding the accessibility of game creation. He stated that the cost of building games is actually decreasing significantly, which he believes provides a unique opportunity for independent developers to succeed despite the volatility in the AAA sector.
