Epic Games shifts to AI-first model for Disney shooter

Epic Games has reportedly delayed an unannounced shooter project developed in collaboration with Disney, which features characters from the Marvel and Star Wars franchises. The delay is part of a major strategic pivot toward an ‘AI-first’ production model.

According to internal reports and communications, the company is moving away from traditional development methods. Specifically, developers have been instructed to cease writing handwritten code, with the intention of using AI tools, such as Anthropic’s Claude, to generate code and art assets. Human developers will transition into roles focused on managing, reviewing, and guiding the output produced by these AI workflows.

CEO Tim Sweeney has publicly defended the shift, stating that the goal is to enable creators to build ‘MORE and BETTER stuff’ rather than simply reducing headcount. The project, which was originally slated for a March 2027 release, has been delayed indefinitely as the studio retools for maximum AI acceleration. This move marks one of the first instances of a major gaming studio attempting to build a flagship title primarily through AI-driven workflows.
