Epicurus and Seneca Emphasize Gratitude in Ancient Philosophy

A teaching attributed to Epicurus states that a person who does not regard what they possess as their greatest wealth is unhappy, even if they own the world. The philosopher argued that tranquility arises from moderating unnecessary desires and appreciating existing blessings such as health, friends, and simple routines.

Seneca, in his work *De Beneficiis*, described gratitude as the most honorable quality of a grateful heart. He emphasized that sincere appreciation strengthens social bonds, prevents ingratitude, and encourages generosity without reducing relationships to mere obligations.
