Epidaurus Theatre Performance of Aristophanes' 'Peace' Halted by Heavy Rain
Around 15,700 spectators gathered at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus for a staged reading of Aristophanes' comedy "Peace" on July 24‑25. The production, directed by Nikos Karathanis with music by Foivos Delivoria, began on Friday evening but was forced to stop after about an hour when a sudden downpour turned the orchestra pit into a lake, making continuation unsafe. Audience members used umbrellas and other protection while applauding the cast before orderly evacuation.
The show resumed on Saturday under clearer skies. The crowd responded with a prolonged standing ovation, praising the actors, musicians and crew for their efforts despite the adverse weather conditions.
