Epirus Governor addresses Egnatia Odos infrastructure issues

During a meeting of the Epirus Regional Committee, Regional Governor Alexandros Kachimanis addressed the ongoing issues surrounding the Egnatia Odos highway. The discussion focused on maintenance concerns, tunnel restrictions, tolls, and the lack of a functional alternative road network in the Epirus region.

Kachimanis attributed the current operational limitations to several factors, including previous governments, civil servants, and European regulations. He specifically claimed that during the transfer process of Egnatia Odos, European entities established the governing rules, referring to an ‘independent tunnel authority in Europe.’ However, reports note that the Administrative Authority for Tunnels is officially defined as an instrument of the Greek state rather than an independent European body.

The Governor also defended the region's legal position regarding tolls, noting that the Council of State has ruled in favor of the Region's appeals, linking the toll issue to the absence of a parallel road network. He further criticized civil servants for their lack of knowledge regarding the matter and referenced former official Christos Spirtzis in his remarks.
