Epirus mountain regions see rise in summer tourism
Mountainous regions in Epirus, Greece, are experiencing a surge in summer tourism as travelers increasingly seek nature-based and authentic experiences. Destinations such as the Zagori villages and the mountainous areas of Ioannina are seeing high occupancy levels, driven by activities like hiking, rafting, and kayaking in the Voidomatis and Aoos rivers.
Despite initial seasonal challenges caused by geopolitical instability, the outlook remains positive. Theodoros Vantolas, president of the Ioannina Hoteliers Association, noted that demand is expected to strengthen through September and October, bolstered by the return of the Israeli market. Key attractions include the Vikos Gorge, the Dragon Lakes of Tymfi and Smolikas, and the North Tzoumerka region, which offers waterfalls and traditional villages.
