EPM warns blockades could disrupt 16% of Colombia's power supply

Empresa Pública de Medellín (EPM) issued an alert about possible blockades in the north and northeast of Antioquia that could affect five of its hydroelectric plants – Porce II, Porce III, Guadalupe III, Guadalupe IV and Troneras. Together the plants generate 1,617 MW, roughly 16 % of Colombia’s total electricity demand.

The company said illegal mining activities in the river Porce’s watershed have altered water flow and created landslide risks, threatening infrastructure such as dams, tunnels, access roads and measurement stations. Blockades could also prevent staff from reaching the facilities, endangering reliable power delivery at a time when the national grid is already strained by low water inflows linked to the El Niño phenomenon. EPM has informed local, departmental and national authorities and is seeking measures and dialogue to protect the critical energy infrastructure and the surrounding communities.
