EPO President seeks consensus on Greek referees for Super League derbies

During a Super League refereeing seminar in Xanthi, Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) President Makis Gagatsis addressed the ongoing delay regarding the reinstatement of Greek referees for major league derbies. Gagatsis stated that the federation aims to reach a consensus among clubs to ensure that referee appointments are widely accepted, rather than imposing a unilateral decision that could trigger further disputes.

Chief Referee Stephane Lanua noted that while efforts are being made, a final decision is pending because one club remains in disagreement while the other three major clubs are in alignment. Gagatsis emphasized the goal of strengthening Greek refereeing so that officials can participate not only in high-stakes domestic matches but also in major international competitions like the EURO.

However, some critics have raised concerns regarding a lack of transparency. Questions have been posed about the sudden postponement of a recent Professional Football Committee meeting and the specific identity of the club opposing the return of Greek referees to derby matches.
