Eppstein commissions battery storage grid compatibility study
The municipality of Eppstein has commissioned the grid operator Syna to conduct a grid compatibility study for battery energy storage systems within the local network. The investigation aims to assess the opportunities and risks of both centralized and decentralized battery storage, alongside the technical, regulatory, and economic frameworks required for implementation.
Battery storage is intended to increase flexibility and balance price fluctuations caused by the intermittent nature of solar and wind energy. By storing excess power during periods of high production, such as midday solar peaks, the systems can stabilize the grid and secure energy supply during periods of high demand or low renewable output.
Data from the Bundesnetzagentur indicates significant growth in Germany's battery capacity, which rose from 3.86 GWh at the start of 2022 to over 30 GWh by July 2026. While private household storage accounts for 80 percent of this capacity, the number of large-scale storage facilities is also steadily increasing.
