Epson expands Toner Free initiative in Latin America
Epson has announced the regional expansion of its ‘Toner Free’ initiative across Latin America, aiming to accelerate the adoption of inkjet technology within the enterprise printing market. The initiative serves as an alternative to traditional laser printing, which relies on high temperatures to melt plastic toner powder onto paper.
To address the environmental impact of the laser industry—which produces plastic waste equivalent to 246 billion straws or 5 billion bottles annually—Epson has decided to cease global marketing of laser printers. Instead, the company is focusing innovation on its PrecisionCore Heat-Free inkjet technology.
This technology eliminates the need for plastic toner and heat during the ink expulsion process, reducing both electricity consumption and waste generation. For example, the Epson WorkForce Enterprise AM-C5000 can achieve up to 86% savings in electricity consumption and generate up to 53% less waste compared to equivalent color laser printers. The move aligns with regional corporate trends, as a KPMG study indicates that 69% of the largest companies in Latin America already publish sustainability reports.
