Equatorial Piauí fined R$ 200,000 for power quality issues
The Public Ministry of Piauí (Procon) has rejected an appeal from Equatorial Piauí, upholding a R$ 200,000 fine against the utility provider. The decision follows complaints regarding frequent power interruptions, voltage fluctuations, and poor electricity quality in the Luís Correia region.
The investigation originated from a consumer report highlighting the network's inability to meet demand, particularly during peak occupancy periods in local developments. While Equatorial Piauí argued that its continuity indicators (DIC, FIC, and DMIC) remained within regulatory limits between January 2024 and June 2025, the appellate board ruled that these metrics did not sufficiently address the specific structural failures and quality issues reported.
The board also noted that the company failed to prove that the service disruptions were caused by unforeseen circumstances or force majeure.
