Equine infectious anemia confirmed in Perth East County, Ontario

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed a case of equine infectious anemia (EIA) in Perth East County, Ontario. On September 17, a horse tested positive for the viral disease during testing requested by the owner to meet United States export requirements. The animal was not showing clinical signs at the time of sampling.

A CFIA investigation is currently underway. Movement controls have been implemented for the infected horse and all contact animals on the premises, where other equines are reported to be present.

EIA is a viral disease that attacks the immune system and is transmitted through blood-feeding insects or contaminated instruments. There is no vaccine or cure for the virus; infected animals remain carriers for life and must undergo strict quarantine or be euthanized.
