Equinor discovers gas at Gullfaks Sør field in the North Sea
Equinor, Petoro, and OMV Norge have announced a gas discovery at the Gullfaks Sør field in the North Sea. The find is estimated to contain between 3.3 and 10.6 million oil equivalent barrels. The discovery was made via a side-track well drilled in connection with a production well.
Gunnar Egge, production director for Gullfaks, noted that the discovery is highly positive as it was achieved through cost-effective drilling and is expected to be profitable, helping to maintain activity at the Gullfaks field. The Gullfaks field has been in production since 1986 and serves as a major hub for surrounding satellite fields in the Tampen area.
Separately, the Norwegian offshore industry is facing a transition toward smaller, more cost-sensitive projects. While Rystad Energy predicts high investment levels on the Norwegian continental shelf through 2030–2031, a significant decline is expected thereafter. Industry leaders emphasize the need for stable regulatory frameworks and access to new exploration areas to sustain the supplier industry and ensure long-term productivity.
