Equinor reports over 500 health complaints following new helicopter use

Equinor has recorded over 500 reports of hearing issues and other physical reactions following the introduction of new Leonardo AW189 helicopters for offshore transport. Internal documents indicate 285 reports specifically concerning hearing problems among employees, alongside 241 cases involving nausea and discomfort caused by high-frequency noise and intense vibrations.

Equinor stated that out of approximately 10,000 passenger trips conducted with the AW189 since November 2025, there have been roughly 200 unique health, safety, and environment (HSE) reports. The company maintains that the helicopters are safe to fly with, citing measurements that suggest low risk of hearing damage when double hearing protection is utilized. Passengers who do not wish to use the AW189 are being offered alternative aircraft models.

Employees at Vår Energi, which uses the same helicopter model for crew transport, have also reported significant tinnitus to the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority (Havindustritilsynet). Individual accounts describe immediate onset of numbness, hearing loss, and permanent tinnitus following flights.
