Equinor scales back Troll West Electrification project
Equinor and its partners have decided to scale back the Troll West Electrification (TWEL) project in the North Sea. The partnership will complete the project after commissioning the first electric export compressor on the Troll C platform, but will not install the second electric export compressor originally planned in the 2021 development plan.
The decision follows a reassessment of the project's impact on emissions, energy deliveries, and value creation. Since 2023, the Troll field has been operating at maximum capacity, meaning any temporary loss of capacity on Troll C can no longer be easily offset by production from Troll A. Installing the second compressor would require extensive modifications, potentially reducing production from Troll C for up to 21 months.
Furthermore, the second compressor would only be required until gas demand is expected to decrease in the mid-2030s, while the Troll C platform is expected to remain operational until approximately 2050. Despite the reduction in scope, the TWEL project has already achieved significant results, reducing emissions from the Troll area by approximately 330,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
