Italy intensifies coastal surveillance and maritime rescues during summer season

Italian authorities have intensified maritime and coastal surveillance across various regions in preparation for the Ferragosto holiday weekend. The Coast Guard and local police are conducting widespread inspections to ensure public safety, enforce beach regulations, and prevent illegal occupation of maritime territory.

In Sicily, enforcement actions in Brolo and Capo d’Orlando resulted in fines for inadequate lifesaving services and the seizure of unattended beach equipment. In Puglia, authorities in Bari have been removing unauthorized gazebos and cooking equipment from beaches to ensure public access, while also targeting illegal waste dumping.

Rescue operations have been frequent due to high seasonal activity. Notable incidents include a 42-year-old man rescued by helicopter after falling from a cliff in Calabria, and several maritime rescues involving swimmers, kite-surfers, and a malfunctioning jet ski. In the Marche region, the Coast Guard reported over 7,700 inspections and 73 rescues since the start of the summer season.

Additionally, a significant security measure was implemented near Framura after a mine and a torpedo were discovered on the seabed, leading to a restricted navigation zone. Authorities continue to urge caution, advising tourists and sailors to monitor weather conditions and strictly adhere to safety protocols.
