Erba to commemorate 1944 bombing victims
The town of Erba will hold a series of commemorations on September 30 and October 1 to honor the 77 victims of the 1944 bombings. The tragedy occurred when bombs were erroneously dropped on the wrong target, striking Piazza Vittorio Veneto and surrounding fields.
To mark the event, the bell of the Prepositurale church will ring at 2:26 PM on September 30, the time of the initial attack, and again at 1:24 PM on October 1 to mark the second strike. A solemn mass will be held at Sant’Eufemia, featuring local folklore groups and students.
The ceremony will conclude with the blessing of a recently renovated public washhouse in Piazza Mercato, a site heavily impacted by the historical bombings. Mayor Mauro Caprani expressed gratitude to the volunteers and local groups, including the Alpini of Erba, for their efforts in preserving the site and the community's memory.
