ERC emphasizes importance of independent journalism for democracy

The ERC (Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social) has emphasized that free, independent, rigorous, and plural journalism is essential for ensuring citizens' right to information and the functioning of democratic societies. This statement was made in observance of World Journalism Day.

The regulator noted that the media ecosystem is undergoing profound transformations, facing demanding challenges such as the impacts of digitalization, artificial intelligence, and disinformation on the production and circulation of information. Additionally, the sector faces increasing pressure regarding the sustainability of media outlets and a weakening journalistic presence in certain territories, which affects local access to information.

Despite these challenges, the ERC identified opportunities to reaffirm the value of journalism through fact-checking, contextualization, and professional ethics. The organization reiterated its commitment to promoting freedom of expression and the press as a strategic priority.
