Gabriel Rufián sets conditions for ERC candidacy amid internal tension

Political tension is rising within Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) ahead of the Spanish general elections on November 29. Gabriel Rufián, the party's spokesperson in Congress, has expressed his desire to represent ERC but has set conditions for his candidacy. Specifically, Rufián seeks to run as part of a broader coalition with other left-wing and anti-fascist forces, a strategy that clashes with the party leadership's preference to maintain its own brand.

ERC leadership, headed by Oriol Junqueras, has resisted this coalition approach to avoid diluting the party's identity. In response to the uncertainty surrounding Rufián's decision, the party has prepared a contingency plan. Jordi Albert, a deputy in the Parliament and a close ally of Junqueras, has begun collecting endorsements to potentially lead the Barcelona list if Rufián withdraws.

Internal friction is further evidenced by the announcement that several deputies, including Pilar Vallugera and Jordi Salvador, will not seek reelection due to strained relations with Rufián. Meanwhile, Junts per Catalunya has confirmed Marta Madrenas will lead its list in Girona, as she was the sole candidate for that constituency.
