Gabriel Rufián admits failure to unite left-wing forces for Spanish elections

Efforts to unite Spain's alternative left-wing forces ahead of the November 29 general elections have largely failed. Gabriel Rufián, the Esquerra Republicana (ERC) candidate, admitted to a “spectacular failure” in attempting to forge a unified front to counter the right-wing parties PP and Vox.

Negotiations reached a deadlock in both Madrid and Catalonia. In Catalonia, a cooperation pact between ERC and Podemos has caused significant friction with the Frente Amplio, specifically Catalunya en Comú, which views the move as a “hostile takeover” of their electoral territory. In Madrid, disputes over seat allocations and party leadership have prevented a broader coalition.

Internal tensions within ERC have also surfaced, with former leader Ernest Maragall questioning Rufián's leadership and suggesting the party is being conditioned by his presence on the lists. Despite the lack of a unified platform, Rufián has indicated he will remain the head of the list for the sake of responsibility, even as he expressed frustration with his own party's leadership regarding the design of the electoral lists.
