ERC requests change of ‘Lérida’ to ‘Lleida’ on all road signs

The Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) party has submitted a non-legislative motion to the Spanish Congress of Deputies requesting the removal of the name ‘Lérida’ from all official road signage. The party argues that ‘Lleida’ is the officially and legally recognized name of the city and province.

Presented by deputy Inés Granollers and spokesperson Gabriel Rufián, the initiative calls for an immediate review of all road signs under government jurisdiction that still use the non-official designation. The ERC notes that while Law 2/1992 officially changed the names of Girona and Lérida to Girona and Lleida, the old name persists on various maps, public documents, and road signs across different administrations.

The proposal requests that the Executive branch create a complete inventory of all signs using ‘Lérida’, identify the responsible administrative bodies, and establish a public schedule for their replacement to ensure institutional respect for the territory and its language.
