ERC seeks protection for political symbols in Spanish sports venues

The Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) parliamentary group has submitted a non-legislative proposal to the Spanish Congress requesting that the government protect the right to freedom of expression in sports venues. The initiative seeks to prevent political, police, or private instructions from prohibiting the display of ‘esteladas’ or other political symbols in stadiums.

The proposal follows a controversial incident at the Martínez Valero Stadium in Elche, where the National Police intervened before a match between Elche and Barcelona, resulting in the detention of a minor and the seizure of an estelada flag. The ERC argues that no current regulations limit the display of such symbols based solely on their political nature.

In addition to requesting a government report within three months regarding measures to protect expression, the proposal asks the government to request the Ombudsman to conduct a monograph investigation. This investigation would look into potential discriminatory actions by State Security Forces, their neutrality, and the possible existence of organized groups with authoritarian or racist ideologies that contradict democratic principles.
