Ercan Airport systems meet ICAO safety standards, officials say

The Civil Aviation Department has issued a statement addressing claims regarding the safety and technical capabilities of systems at Ercan Airport. The department clarified that the Instrument Landing System (ILS) used at the airport possesses the technical specifications required to provide CAT 1 approach services, specifically for runway 29L. The department noted that ILS categories are determined not only by device specifications but also by runway infrastructure, geographical conditions, and terrain.

Responding to reports suggesting that air traffic control (ATC), radar, and communication systems at the airport are unsafe or non-functional due to their age, officials stated that older equipment does not inherently imply a lack of safety. They emphasized that all navigation devices undergo periodic flight checks by the State Airports Authority (DHMİ) and operate within the tolerances established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Maintenance is conducted on a planned and timely basis, and any issues affecting flight safety are immediately communicated via NOTAM.

Furthermore, the department announced plans to renew the communication, radar, and ATC systems at the airport in the near future under a protocol with the State Airports Authority.
