Ercan Airport: Two British citizens arrested for tobacco smuggling

Two British citizens of Pakistani origin, identified as M. H. Z. (39) and D. H. K. (31), were apprehended at Ercan Airport while attempting to smuggle large quantities of tobacco products. During an X-ray inspection at the Kale 9 checkpoint, authorities discovered a total of 119 cartons of Benson cigarettes and 880 packs of 50-gram Amber Leaf tobacco hidden in their luggage.

The suspects stated during questioning that they purchased the items from three unidentified markets because the prices in Northern Cyprus were significantly lower than in the United Kingdom. Both individuals were charged with ‘Attempting to Act Contrary to the Customs and Monopoly Law’. Following their court appearance, the suspects were remanded in custody at the Central Prison for a period not exceeding 15 days.
