Erciş cabbage harvest begins in Van, Turkey
The harvest season for geographically indicated Erciş cabbage has officially commenced in the Erciş district of Van. Approximately 500 farmers are cultivating the product across more than 1,700 decares of land.
The cabbage is noted for its large size and distinct flavor, making it a preferred choice for making stuffed cabbage rolls and pickles. The produce is being distributed to several surrounding provinces, including Bitlis, Ağrı, Iğdır, Muş, and Diyarbakır.
Local producers, such as Samet Kızılkaya, emphasize the use of traditional heirloom seeds passed down through generations. The crop, which is typically planted in June, is harvested in October and serves as a significant source of income for the regional economy. Individual units are reportedly selling for 100 TL.
