Erciyes University surgeons remove malignant shoulder tumor

Surgeons at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine successfully removed a malignant mesenchymal tumor from the shoulder of a 52-year-old patient. The patient, who traveled from Çorum, had experienced a rapidly growing mass in the left shoulder area for approximately one year and had previously undergone radiotherapy.

A multidisciplinary team led by Professor İbrahim Halil Kafadar from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology performed a wide surgical resection to ensure healthy tissue margins. To repair the significant tissue defect caused by the tumor removal, the Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery team, including Dr. İlknur Bayır, utilized a latissimus dorsi muscle-skin flap harvested from the patient’s own back tissue. This reconstruction helped maintain both the functional and aesthetic integrity of the shoulder.
