Erdőbénye discovery: Celtic spear and shield set unearthed

Archaeologists have discovered a yellow spear and a complete set of shields near Erdőbénye in northeastern Hungary. The find was uncovered during a community archaeology project in September.

According to the Hungarian National Museum, this assemblage is the first of its kind found in the area and provides significant insight into local Iron Age communities. The discovery is part of an ongoing archaeological mapping project in the Erdőbénye region that began in 2024, involving collaboration between professional archaeologists, academic institutions, and local volunteers.

The research is led by Vera Majerik and Borbála Nyíri from the National Institute of Archaeology, with coordination by Gábor Bakos and Máté Piros-Pozdora. Participating institutions include ELTE University and the University of Miskolc. Experts are currently analyzing the artifacts alongside environmental data to better understand how ancient populations utilized the landscape.
