During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin held bilateral talks to discuss deepening bilateral relations. Erdoğan stated that ties between Turkey and Russia have reached their most advanced level compared to any previous period, emphasizing cooperation in energy, trade, and tourism.

A central focus of the discussions was the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. Erdoğan noted that the project is in its final stages and indicated that Turkey and Russia intend to collaborate on additional nuclear power plants following its completion. The Russian state nuclear company, Rosatom, is on track to commission the plant's first unit within the year. Once operational, the plant's four reactors are expected to provide approximately 10% of Turkey's electricity supply.

Regarding regional and international politics, Erdoğan addressed Turkey's relationship with the SCO, noting that pursuing closer ties with the organization does not imply distancing Turkey from the West. He also commented on the Russia-Ukraine war, expressing Turkey's readiness to support the peace process. Additionally, Erdoğan issued warnings to Greece regarding the militarization of islands in the Aegean.

Economic data highlighted the strength of the partnership, with Turkey's imports from Russia valued at $42.37 billion last year, of which $29.8 billion was attributed to the energy sector. Putin characterized Turkey as one of Russia's privileged partners in both economic and foreign policy sectors.
