Erdoğan calls for UN Security Council veto abolition

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called for the total abolition of the veto mechanism within the United Nations, arguing that the current structure limits the will of over 190 countries to serve the interests of only five permanent members of the Security Council.

Speaking in New York following the 81st UN General Assembly session, Erdoğan proposed a reformed system featuring a more effective General Assembly where elected members serve fixed terms and must regain international trust for reelection. He emphasized that such reforms are necessary to ensure equitable representation for Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Islamic world, and Europe.

Regarding the Middle East, Erdoğan stated that lasting peace in Gaza is impossible without an immediate ceasefire and a dignified future for Palestinians. He urged the international community, specifically the United States, to pressure Israel to respect peace plans. Additionally, he noted Turkey's ongoing diplomatic efforts to restore the Black Sea grain corridor.
