Erdoğan calls for UN Security Council reform on 81st anniversary

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a message marking the 81st anniversary of the United Nations, calling for urgent reforms to make the international system more just and inclusive. He specifically emphasized the need to restructure the UN Security Council to better meet the expectations of the international community.

Erdoğan cited ongoing global challenges—including wars, humanitarian disasters, climate change, hunger, poverty, racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia—as evidence that the UN's founding mission is more critical than ever. He pointed to the situation in Gaza, describing it as a genocide that has claimed more than 74,000 Palestinian lives, as a primary example of why the current international structure requires immediate reform.

The Turkish leader expressed support for the ‘UN80 Initiative’ launched by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Additionally, he noted that Turkey is working closely with the organization toward the goal of transforming Istanbul into a United Nations center.
