Erdoğan invokes Battle of Preveza to claim Mediterranean as ‘Turkish lake’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Defense Minister Yaşar Güler commemorated the 488th anniversary of the Battle of Preveza and Turkish Navy Day. During the commemorations, Erdoğan referenced the 1538 naval victory of Ottoman admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa, stating that the triumph ‘turned the Mediterranean into a Turkish lake.’

The remarks link historical Ottoman naval dominance to modern Turkish maritime strategy. Defense Minister Güler connected the historical legacy of the battle to contemporary Turkish naval activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, specifically citing the ‘Blue Homeland’ (Mavi Vatan) doctrine and the country’s interests in Cyprus.
