Tadalafil use associated with increased glaucoma risk in men
A large comparative study of 73,854 men aged 40 and older, drawn from the global TriNetX Analytics Network, examined the eye‑health outcomes of men prescribed the erectile‑dysfunction drug tadalafil (Cialis) for up to five years between 2012 and 2022. Half of the participants received tadalafil or another PDE5 inhibitor for lower‑urinary‑tract symptoms linked to an enlarged prostate, while the other half did not.
The analysis found that men on tadalafil were 22 % more likely to develop glaucoma overall, 33 % more likely to develop primary open‑angle glaucoma, and 32 % more likely to develop ocular hypertension. They were also 33 % more likely to start glaucoma treatment during the five‑year follow‑up. The findings were published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Researchers emphasized that the observational design cannot prove causation, but they recommend regular eye‑health monitoring for long‑term tadalafil users, especially those with family history or existing high eye pressure.
