Erekle Gugava charged in $1.3 billion healthcare fraud scheme
A federal grand jury in Massachusetts has indicted Erekle Gugava, a 33-year-old Georgian national, for conspiracy to launder proceeds linked to a massive healthcare fraud scheme. The Department of Justice describes the case as its largest prosecuted healthcare fraud operation.
Prosecutors allege that Gugava purportedly owned ND Medical Solutions, a durable medical equipment company based in Pennsylvania, between February and July 2025. During this five-month period, the company allegedly submitted at least $1.3 billion in fraudulent claims to Medicare, private insurers, and employer-sponsored health plans. While the total claims reached $1.3 billion, insurers reportedly paid the company approximately $6.5 million.
The indictment claims the scheme relied on stolen identities of elderly and disabled Americans and was orchestrated by a transnational criminal organization based in Russia and other locations. Gugava is accused of facilitating the movement of stolen funds through domestic and international financial channels. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
