Bremen prison investigation targets staff and inmates for smuggling

Authorities in Bremen have launched a major investigation into a bribery and smuggling ring at the Bremen-Oslebshausen correctional facility. Following months of undercover operations, police and prosecutors conducted extensive searches of ten residences in Bremen and Lower Saxony, as well as eleven prison cells.

The investigation targets 23 suspects, including six prison employees, one external service worker, and ten inmates. Allegations include the systematic smuggling of drugs, mobile phones, high-quality food, and cosmetics into the facility. In exchange, inmates reportedly distributed or sold these items.

Justice Senator Claudia Schilling described the operation as a success, stating that corruption undermines the foundations of justice. Several employees have been suspended or issued entry bans pending further investigation. The prosecutor's office is investigating charges of bribery, corruption, and large-scale drug trafficking.
