Erfurt bike repair stations face repeated vandalism, city stalls expansion

Erfurt operates four public bike‑repair stations that provide tools such as air pumps, hex keys and pliers for cyclists. Three of the stations line the Gera bike path and a fourth is at Europaplatz. All have been repeatedly damaged by theft and vandalism, with tools and pump connections cut or removed. Despite repairs, added anti‑theft measures and occasional upgrades, the city reports no improvement in the situation.

City spokeswoman Sophie Pohl said the main challenge is maintaining the stations, which has made the municipality cautious about building additional ones. The municipal housing company Kowo runs several more concealed stations near residential building entrances; those are less exposed but the more visible Kowo station on Juri‑Gagarin‑Ring 148 has also been targeted, according to Kowo spokesperson Thomas Haßler.
