Local officials and residents in Erfurt criticize the large sealed area in front of the historic Peterskirche, calling it "eine stadtökologische Katastrophe" (an urban ecological disaster). The city plans to plant only about 20 new trees on the Petersberg plateau, a measure viewed as insufficient to improve the micro‑climate or reduce heat load.

Elke Oberleiter praised recent transport improvements but warned that the current handling of the square neglects ecological needs.
